Android · Terminal and Kitchen

The apps are optional.

Every screen in AtTable is a web page that installs to a home screen and runs full screen. That has not changed. These two exist for the handful of jobs our web pages do not do — and if none of them is your problem, you do not need them.

Terminal
Kitchen
Why they exist

Three things the web pages do not do.

Make a soundA browser refuses to play audio until somebody has touched the page, and a pass display is opened once and then left for a whole service. The Kitchen app has no autoplay policy to satisfy: it rings on a screen nobody has touched, which is the entire job.
Stay litThe Kitchen app holds the screen awake for the whole service. The web board does not, so a tablet left alone goes dark on its sleep timer — and a chef walking to the pass and finding a black rectangle has to put something down and touch it.
Stay pairedA web view’s storage can be evicted under pressure, which puts a paired till back on the pairing screen mid-service, needing a manager and a fresh code. Both apps keep the pairing in the device’s secure storage, so it survives the web view clearing its storage; a full uninstall still needs a fresh code.

Two apps, one job each.

Terminal

The till, the handheld and the bill — the screen staff carry.

  • Keeps the screen paired when the web view clears its storage, so a till that forgets itself does not need a manager and a fresh code mid-service. A full uninstall still needs a fresh code.

Kitchen

The pass display — the board bolted to the wall.

  • Rings on a screen nobody has touched. A browser will not make a sound until someone taps the page, and a board is opened once and left for a whole service.
  • Holds the screen awake for the whole service. The web board does not keep the screen on, so a tablet left alone goes dark on its sleep timer.

iPhone and iPad

There is no iPhone download, and there cannot be.

Apple does not allow an app to be installed from a website. That is a rule about iOS, not a gap in this page — no restaurant software can offer you one.

On an iPhone or iPad, add AtTable to the home screen instead. It runs full screen with no address bar, and every screen a venue uses works there. The one thing it cannot do is ring a pass display nobody has touched — which is the reason the Kitchen app exists on Android first.

Before you install

Two things worth knowing first.

Android will askBecause this does not come from the Play Store, Android asks you to allow installs from your browser the first time. That prompt is expected. You can turn the permission back off afterwards and the app keeps working.
It will not update itselfA store keeps apps current; a file does not. This build stays at its version until somebody comes back to this page and installs a newer one. The web app underneath updates on its own, so a venue is never running old prices — but the shell around it waits for you.
Mounting a kitchen screen

Lock it to the wall, not just to the app.

Newer versions of iPadOS and Android can turn or resize any app on a tablet, even one that asks to stay landscape. So the tablet itself has to hold the board in place. Three settings, set once when the screen goes up.

Lock the rotationMount it landscape first, then lock it there.iPad: open Control Centre and tap the rotation lock.Android: pull down Quick Settings and turn Auto-rotate off while the screen is landscape.
Keep it on the boardStops anyone swiping out to another app, or the board being shrunk into a window.iPad: in Settings → Accessibility, turn on Guided Access and set a passcode. Open the board, triple-click the top button, then tap Start.Android: search Settings for “pin” and turn on app pinning. Open the board, open the app switcher, tap the app’s icon and choose Pin.
Keep it litiPad: in Settings → Display & Brightness, set Auto-Lock to Never. The web board cannot keep the screen awake on its own.Android: nothing to do with the Kitchen app — it keeps the screen on for the whole service. Running the web board instead? Set Screen timeout to its longest in Settings → Display.

Most venues never install these.

The till, the bills and the floor all run in a browser on the tablet you already own. Start there — and come back only if the pass cannot hear itself.
